For much of the country, October signals the end of outdoor season.

In Texas, it can feel like we’re finally getting ours back.

After months when midday heat can make spending extended periods outside challenging, October brings the possibility of longer afternoons, dinners outdoors, weekend gatherings, and evenings that don’t immediately send everyone back inside.

And that’s a good reminder of why we create outdoor spaces in the first place.

They’re meant to be used.

October doesn’t require a special occasion.

Take dinner outside on a weeknight. Watch a game on the patio. Have coffee outdoors on Saturday morning. Invite a few friends over for something casual instead of organizing a major event.

Outdoor living doesn’t always have to mean entertaining twenty people.

Sometimes it’s simply moving something you already do indoors to a different part of your home.

This is also a good month to experience your backyard at different times.

A space you barely noticed during a hot August afternoon may become your favorite place at 6:30 on an October evening.

You begin noticing different things—the changing light, cooler air, sounds around the property, and parts of the yard that become more inviting as temperatures drop.

That’s one of the interesting things about living in Texas.

Our outdoor season doesn’t necessarily follow the calendar people associate with other parts of the country.

So before thinking about putting the backyard away for the year, do the opposite.

Open the door.

October may be one of the best months to use it.
