October is a great time to look at your outdoor space with fresh eyes.
After months of Texas heat, strong sun, storms, and regular use, your backyard has just been through one of the toughest parts of the year. Now that temperatures are beginning to ease, it’s easier to spend some time outside and see what summer left behind.
Start with the areas you use regularly. Look at patios, walkways, outdoor structures, built features, and surfaces. You don’t need to turn this into a major inspection. The idea is simply to notice changes that weren’t there earlier in the year.
Has anything shifted? Are there surfaces that could use attention? Are there areas that didn’t perform as well as expected?
October gives you an opportunity to notice those things before they disappear from your mind during the holidays and winter months.
But there’s another question worth asking: What did you learn about your backyard this summer?
Maybe there was a spot nobody wanted to use during the afternoon. Perhaps you realized you needed more covered space. Maybe a certain area handled gatherings beautifully while another consistently sat empty.
Those observations are valuable because they’re based on months of actually living with your outdoor space.
You may also discover that your priorities have changed. Something that seemed important when your backyard was first designed may not matter as much anymore, while a feature you never considered could now make a meaningful difference.
That’s part of owning an outdoor space. It evolves along with the people who use it.
Before jumping into the next project, use October to walk around, take a few notes, and think about what worked and what didn’t.
Your summer experience can be one of the best guides for deciding what comes next.
